Blurring the lines to expand musical communities at Convergence Theory: a digital, genre-defying season finale

FAWN closes their season in a digital landscape built to break down barriers between creative audiences.

TORONTO – Convergence Theory is a yearlong, three-part series presented by FAWN Chamber Creative that will culminate with their most genre-defying concert yet. Described as “daring and underground” and “similar to a night club or a house party” by Neomemoire, FAWN’s newest one-night-only concert series, co-curated by Amanda Smith and David Jones, is a one of a kind program that features underground, professional experimental electronic music notably matched with new media art. Their third and final Convergence Theory concert of the season will be on Saturday March 28 2020 at Victory Social Club on Dundas West in Toronto. These events have carved out a niche that has been needed in Toronto, providing a space where Canada’s most forward thinking visual and classical experimental art scenes can collide. Audiences can expect to hear music by composers and electronic artists who are known for their boundary-pushing musical styles, with immersive visuals that will plunge them even deeper into their experiences.

FAWN’s upcoming concert features three remarkably inventive Canadian music creators: interdisciplinary composers Maxime Corbeil-Perron and David Storen, as well as experimental ambient artist Dame Cook. The night will also include some of Toronto’s most versatile and creative performers, including FAWN Resident Artist and singer Jonathan MacArthur, FAWN Music Director and double bassist Adam Scime, and modular electronic artist ACOTE. This time around, FAWN is collaborating with the media arts collective at Victory Social Club in an immersive digital environment that animates the whole space bringing the audience deeper into their music experiences. In addition, past FAWN collaborator Omar Rivero is working with Cook to create responsive projections for her live ambient set with amplified tap shoes. One of the many highlights of the March 28thevent will be a stereoscopic set by Corbeil-Perron, experienced through blue and red 3D glasses.

Smith, FAWN’s Founding Artistic Director, has been dreaming up the Convergence Theory series for quite some time and believes it will serve as an bridging platform for likeminded, creative communities to come together. She explains,“With all of the fascinating cultural events that happen in Toronto, the creative communities here are still quite segmented. My hope is that Convergence Theory can serve as a catalyst for audiences and artists alike to expand their interests and make new connections.”

To further the melding of communities, Smith brought on co-curator David Jones, a local electronic and experimental musician, video-artist, DIY concert curator and audiovisual archivist. Jones expresses that, “By drawing from communities known for their open-mindedness and dedication to their craft, we hope to set in motion something special in a performance setting.”

Convergence Theory has been supported by the Toronto Arts Council with a media sponsorship by Musicworks magazine. FAWN is privileged to hold a residency at The Music Gallery this winter where ACOTE, MacArthur and Scime will be rehearsing to create a guided improvisation set with a graphic score by Storen.

About the Artists:

All three music artists bring something special to the program. Corbeil-Perron is a Montreal-based composer, director and audiovisual performance artist whose work has been presented in more than a hundred international events and festivals, including: Mutek (CA), L.E.V. (ES), Intonal (SE), Seeing Sound (UK), Videoformes (FR) and more. He has received commissions from the Continuum Ensemble, the Ensemble Supermusique, the Ensemble d’Oscillateurs, and the Productions Totem Contemporain. Storen is an award-winning composer and multi-media artist based in Vancouver whose work is highly influenced by the visual arts. Storen is a recipient of 3 prizes in the SOCAN Foundation’s Awards for Young Composers and has been performed across Canada by ensembles such as FAWN Chamber Creative, Standing Wave, Ensemble Paramirabo, Erato Ensemble, and the Nu:BC Collective, among others. Storen is one of the composers of FAWN’s most recent opera-ballet, Pandora, which they produced in May 2019. Cook is a Toronto-based experimental electronic artist whose music moves amorphously from ambient meditative drones to harsh abstract beats, re-contextualizing pop culture ephemera into conceptual mini-set pieces. She draws inspiration from her life as a trans woman for her work, creating at times oppressive soundscapes desperately seeking relief.

FAWN Chamber Creative is a Toronto-based new music and opera collective, dedicated to creating and presenting new Canadian classical music in ways that showcases intersections between art forms and attracts diverse audiences.
